A Change of Direction
I've focused my writing on technology and programming for several years, but I think it's time for a change.
For the past several years, I've focused my writing (though intermittently) on technology and programming. It made sense, considering the fact that I'm a software engineer and really enjoy building new things. When I came across problems or new ways of doing something, I would write a post about it for two reasons:
- So I have something to reference later, when I inevitably forget.
- To potentially help someone else who may run into the same problem.
AI is changing everything though, on both a personal and professional level. From a personal perspective, you have companies relentlessly pushing AI into anything and everything, saying it's the best thing that ever happened. You get no choice in the matter. Companies just assume you want some machine integrated with all aspects of your life and knowing everything about you.
Professionally, AI is being pushed down your throat as well. We're given "mandates" to adopt and use it as part of our daily workflow. Who cares if it destroys the environment. It doesn't matter if it reduces your critical thinking abilities. Automate your emails, let it write documentation, check your PRs, have it write code!
There's little to no consideration of preference, views, or oh, I don't know - why I got into development in the first place. It's all about speed and productivity now. That's all that matters.
All of this to say that my interest in technology and my desire to continue on this path are the lowest they've ever been. Because of that, I'll be changing the direction of this site. I'm sure there will still be the occasional post about some technology or programming thing I come across, but for the most part I'll be focused on creative writing and fiction.
What does that mean going forward? Well, blogs will start to focus on topics such as plot, characters, and other areas of writing. I've also created a new section on the site called "Narratives", where you can find short short stories and other works that I decide to publish.
Posts in the "Narratives" section will only have the initial few sentences available without a login. This should give readers enough to decide if they want to continue reading, but also prevent AI from stealing everything for it's training models.
Since this is a large deviation from what I worked on originally, they'll be published to a separate newsletter called "Writer's Workshop". Any technology and programming related blogs will continue to be published to "Developer Digest" and my 3D printing / project oriented posts will go to "Artificer Avenue"

One final change is the domain for the website. Everything is now available via kevin-williams.net, Rather than kevinwilliams.dev.
